High up, on the fir-clad mountain peaks of southwestern Eurytania, and wedged between vertical gray rocks with wild majesty, stands the holy monastery of Prussos. It is a crucifix and historical monastery, with magnificent three-story buildings. Between them there is a carved cave, which houses the first and old temple of the monastery. Inside it is kept the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, which is called Prusiotissa and is celebrated with all ecclesiastical and Byzantine splendor on August 22-23.
This miraculous icon of the Virgin is said to have been painted by the Evangelist Luke and came from Prussia in Asia Minor (according to manuscript 3 of the codex of the Holy Monastery of Prussia). It was brought from Prussia by a noble young man during the years of the economachy (829 AD) against the economachy king Theophilos. However, on the way to Greece, in Gallipoli in Thrace, he lost it and the icon was miraculously revealed to a shepherd, with a column of light like a torch - that's why he got the name Pyrsos - in the place where it was hidden. The young man, who had settled in Patras, when he found out, wanted to take her. But the icon miraculously returned again to the wild part of Evrytania, where it was revealed to the local shepherds on the night of August 22nd to 23rd. Then the young man, together with one of his servants, they also went there, where Dionysios and Timotheus respectively became monks.
The icon of Panagia is of the Guide type and is gilded with silver-gilt clothing, a gift of General Georgios Karaiskakis who was hosted in the Monastery during the revolution of 1821 AD. The garment was made by the goldsmith Georgios Karanikas in 1824 AD, as the embossed inscription above the right shoulder of the Virgin reveals: "The Pantanassa. Of the exits of the brave general Georgios Karaiskakis, by Georgios Karanikas, 1824".
In the history of the monastery it is mentioned that it was destroyed many times during the Turkish occupation. However, the last disaster, which turned the buildings into piles of ruins, took place in 1944 AD. from the Germans. After the destruction of the buildings, an officer wanted to burn the church as well. He tried many times, but to no avail. While he was standing outside and giving orders, he was exemplary punished by the hand of the Virgin Mary. An invisible force threw him on the pavement. The blow was strong, and the German was unable to get up. The soldiers picked him up and put him on an animal to take him to Agrinio. Thus the temple remained unharmed, as it was preserved intact throughout the centuries.

Over the rest of Greece, you preside as a bulwark and monstrosity of beauty, your icon from Prussia, Blessed Virgin Mary, and because you quickly enlighten the blind, you drive away the demon and the paralyzed, you tighten the good. You save it from wings and from all harm by running to you. Glory to the one who gives birth to you, glory to the one who admires you, glory to the one who works for you such miracles.
