Robert Stephenson, son of George is rightly seen as one of the greatest engineers. The opening of the world's first locomotive works in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1823, under his name, wasn't without problems... not least of which was that young Robert left for South America in its first few years of existence... on his return, everything changed.
