The National Executive Council of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) have jointly declared a seven-day warning strike beginning on March 18. This decision comes in response to the government's failure to pay four months of withheld salaries to their members following the nationwide strike in 2022.

The unions' demand for the payment of these withheld salaries stems from President Bola Tinubu's directive that workers in public universities, who were not paid during the 2022 strike period, should receive compensation for four months' worth of salaries. While the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation has disbursed the funds to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in compliance with the President's directive, SSANU and NASU members are yet to receive their payments.

The unions' decision to embark on a warning strike underscores their dissatisfaction with the delay in salary payments and the perceived disparity in treatment between academic and non-academic staff. They argue that all university workers affected by the strike should receive equal compensation as directed by the president.

The strike action serves as a means for SSANU and NASU to exert pressure on the government to fulfil its obligations and address the grievances of their members. It highlights the importance of timely and equitable payment of salaries to university staff and underscores the ongoing challenges faced by non-teaching personnel in Nigeria's higher education sector.
