Drop coverage is a common defensive strategy used against the pick & roll. The goal of the on-ball defender is to fight over the top of the screen while the screener’s defender(usually a big) positions themself a few steps back from where the screen is being set.
Often times, there’s an open window for a pull up 3 while the on-ball defender is still fighting over the screen. Read the screen defender’s feet, if he’s stepping up to contest - it’s a blow by. More times than not in drop coverage, the screen defender will be sagging back until you start knocking down this pull up 3! Making the defense respect this shot will open up driving opportunities against a drop.
The ball handler must train this shot against different contests from all angles by both the trailing on-ball defender & the sagging screen defender. Experiment with both hop footwork, a 1,2 stop & different dribble separation moves to get your shot off against a screen defender in a drop
Another good option against a drop would be to slow down, get your defender on your back after he fights through the screen, then snake through the gap of the screen left by the dropping defender. I’ll drop a video on snaking the screen soon
