When the Second Triumvirate formed between Octavian, Marc Antony, and Lepidus, their first order of business was to eliminate political enemies. This led to the proscriptions, a brutal list of targeted individuals who were to be executed. At the top of the list was Cicero, whose relentless attacks on Antony had made him a prime target for revenge. Despite his efforts to flee, Cicero was captured and killed by Antony’s soldiers. His head and hands were publicly displayed in Rome as a chilling message to all who opposed the triumvirs. Cicero’s death marked the tragic end of one of Rome’s greatest orators and the final blow to the Republican cause.
