Description
Aradhana a young seventeen year old girl, lives with her grandfather [dadu]in the Dholakwala chawl in Dadar area, Mumbai. Hailing from the Vidarbha region,
she and her dadu arrived in Mumbai a year back after having lost everything because of famine and extreme poverty.. Both grandfather and granddaughter live
happily even though it’s a life of little means and resources. Her dadu has taught her to be always honest and righteous...With a smile on her face she always
says, ‘bhagwan jo karte hai achhe ke liye karte hai’.
Dadu is a very talented artisan and sculptor, he creates Ganpati idols, hence is very well respected in the area. The fast-moving life of Mumbai is alien for
Aradhana, to make ends meet she distributes tiffin’s i.e. dabba’s to offices situated nearby. But there’s one house that she frequents to, which always scares
her -- a house at Prabhadevi, that is situated at a stone throw distance away from the famous Siddhivinayak temple. Each time ‘A pregnant lady’ always
takes the delivery for some 15 odd dabbas from her but each time Aradhana is greeted by a different pregnant lady! Aradhana feels that it is a shady place and
stays away as much as she can. Around this time, Aradhana catches the eye of local goon and leader of taximan’s Union ; Vilasrao Deshmukh. Vilasrao is cautious about harming Aradhana since his dadu is very respected in the community. Our story starts with the arrival of ‘Madhavdas Bharadwaj’ and his wife ‘Damini Bharadwaj’ to Mumbai, they hail from the town Madhavpura, a small town in the Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh. Madhavdas belongs to rich and reputed family and has everything except a child of his own. Damini is forty years old and
desperately wants to give him a child, she feels surrogacy is her last resort . At her insistence ,the couple have come to Mumbai to have a child through surrogacy. Soon tragedy strikes and dadu is diagnosed with a tumour, he needs surgery or else he will die ...Aradhana is inconsolable, she cannot lose her only family member. Vilasrao tries to take advantage of the situation and coerce Aradhana to sleep with him. One night Vilasrao tries to assault her and she has to flee her own house....unintentionally she lands up at the door of the same house she is afraid to go in ..the woman opens the door and lets her come inside. Here she finds out that the house at Prabhadevi is actually a hotbed of wishes coming true – it is a home ,a residence for surrogate women who spend nine months there after their conception. Here the women are taken care of by expecting couples and doctors . She also realises that this a legitimate option opted by poor women in need of money but for a noble purpose. Aradhana is given the option to go for this medical process as the money involved would help her save
her dadu and it would only do good for one bereft couple. Aradhana will stand by her child no matter what is the cost .... She is a true ‘Yashodha to her Kanha’ ...will her love for her baby earn her the right to be called a mother ??....
