How 16 female scientists at MIT exposed and challenged the institutional sexism they faced in their careers.
Kate Zernike's book The Exceptions: Nancy Hopkins, MIT, and the Fight for Women in Science tells the story of how 16 female scientists at MIT exposed and fought against the institutional sexism they faced in their jobs. The book is about Nancy Hopkins, a molecular biologist and cancer researcher who led the drive for women's equality at MIT. Hopkins was a smart, passionate scientist who wanted to make a change in the world. However, her male colleagues and bosses treated her unfairly, harassed her, and put her in the background. She decided to do something about it, so she counted the lab space given to women teachers and wrote down the differences in resources, recognition, and chances. Her hard work led to a groundbreaking study that made MIT admit it had done wrong and make changes to help women in science.
