(17 May 2017) Robert Mueller was Jim Comey's predecessor as FBI chief. Mueller's now been tabbed as a special counsel to head the investigation into whether the Trump campaign coordinated with Russia in a bid to influence the presidential race.
Democrats had been pushing for somebody outside the Justice Department to handle the investigation after the president fired Comey a week ago.
Mueller's appointment comes a day after revelations that the president had asked Comey to stop an FBI probe into former national security adviser Mike Flynn.
