Sad truth about animals in space. When we think about space flight we often think about humans and our massive achievements over the years. But what often gets forgotten about is what happened to animals in space. There is a sad truth about animals in space that often doesn’t get told.

Most people have heard about Laika the space dog - the Soviet Union poster animal that was sent up to space in the 1950s. What people don’t know is the sad story of Laika, first dog in space.

Before Laika there were several other missions that included animals as the subject. The first rocket launch with animals actually included fruit flights that amazingly managed to make it back to Earth. As the years went by the missions increased and so continued space flight test on animals. The animals got bigger and more intelligent but the fate of these animals continued to be morbid.

While the Soviets were using dogs, NASA instead used monkeys. They worked their way through rhesus monkeys before moving to primates and the most famous monkey astronaut - Ham. It’s often asked ‘what happened to Ham in space’, this is another story that we’ll explore in this video.

This is the sad truth about animals in space. An exploration into missions that we’re almost doomed from the start that went from fruit flies to what happened to ham in space. To allow humans to progress out of orbit it was necessary to space flight test on animals first. But at what cost?
