Ryukyu is the name of the archipelago, including Okinawa Island, that stretches from Kyushu (South West Japan) to Taiwan. It was a distinct kingdom for centuries, gradually assimilated by Japan during the Meiji era, until it became officially a Japanese prefecture in 1879.
Besides distance and a special geographic situation, that kingdom was under the political influence of both China and Japan (from the early 17th century for Japan), which explains the originality of its martial tradition compared to other traditional Japanese martial arts.
One of its main particularities is the set of weapons used in combat, strongly influenced by Chinese and local traditions. Ryukyu Kobujutsu’s arsenal includes the Bo (long staff), the Eiku (boat oar), the Sai, the Tonfa, the Nunchaku, the Kama (sickle), the Tekko (brass knuckles), the Surujin (a chain with a weight), the Rochin (small spear) and the Tinbe (shield). Those weapons’ handling is taught through 42 comprehensive Kata, compiled at the beginning of the 20th century by Taira Shinken, to save those very ancient techniques born about 700 years ago from falling into oblivion.
The weapons’ handling is traditionally called “Emono-jutsu”, and is complementary with empty-handed fighting techniques, “Toshu-jutsu”, nowadays called “Karate”.
