(6 Sep 1994) The leader of the breakaway Russian republic of Chechnya vowed on
Tuesday (6/9) to fight "to the end" for full independence as his
forces prepared new attacks against strongholds of his
Moscow-backed opponents. Speaking to a crowd of several thousand
people gathered to mark Chechnya's third anniversary of
self-proclaimed independence, Chechen President Dzhokar Dudayev
exclaimed: "A people that is not free, is not a people!."
