Rhodesia has many heroes and she certainly took in her fair share of foreign volunteers. A man who fits both of those categories is Frederick Russel Burnham. The American had had quite a career in the Wild West already before heading to Rhodesia right at the same time as the First Matabele War kicked off. Right away he was able to get into the action and became the Rhodesian's leading scout. He remained in the thick of the campaign right until its bloody conclusion at the Shangani Patrol and beyond. Once more he was there for the Second Matabele War and took down the insurrections supposedly semi-divine leader. Wherever there was action, Burnham was there. This is his story.
