Chaney Compacted Concrete (or C3) is Chaney Enterprises’ roller compacted concrete paving mix which has been specially formulated and optimized for strength and mix stability. C3 has the same ingredients as conventional concrete, but is pre-mixed at the plant, then shipped in a dump truck and placed with equipment common to the asphalt industry at an initial costs savings between 5% to 25%.
Roller compacted concrete shares both properties of asphalt and concrete so it truly represents the best of both worlds delivering short and long-term value. The appearance is very similar to the open graded look of asphalt, only it has a much lighter color that reduces the urban heat effect and decreases lighting needs by 30%.
While the initial cost savings is impressive, the real value comes from the lifecycle cost advantages which include less maintenance and reduced lighting costs.
C3 can be used in many ways to meet project requirements. It can be a standalone pavement, or can be used with asphalt where either pavement can overlay the other.
Some of the cost savings for C3 comes from the design. Because roller compacted concrete is stronger and more durable, it requires less material in the form of either eliminating the imported sub base, or reducing the thickness of the paved area.
The strength and durability also reduce labor. Many asphalt pavements require two lifts, where typically, C3 will be placed in only one lift, virtually cutting labor costs in half.
The rest of the cost saving is found in a competitive per ton material cost.
All that combines to deliver a better pavement at a lower cost.
The main determinate of the cost savings is the desired surface. The least expensive is to leave the plain, open, natural look of roller compacted concrete, however methods exist to broom finish, diamond grind, or surface with asphalt. These surface options provide a variety of price points and options to meet any project’s needs.
