Caprice is an orphan Grey-Headed Flying-Fox whose mum was electrocuted on power lines. Nobody noticed there was a live baby on the dead mum until the second day when the home owner saw the baby flapping her wings.
Baby Caprice is still quite dehydrated and very quiet, but she appears to have no burns. I hesitate to say she's sad - but after losing their mums the babies often go really quiet for a few days till they start to feel secure again.
Caprice will be going to a new carer today or tomorrow and will be raised till she's old enough for creche.
Getting a baby to let go of their mum's nipple is sometimes difficult. You have to get your fingers in the corners of their mouth and wiggle.
Baby bats have tiny backwards curving teeth which bite onto mum's nipple so they don't fall (ouch). Their teeth are like little sharp needles.
