The Charlotte area will experience dangerously cold temperatures over Christmas weekend, with lows falling into the teens.
A winter weather advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 21, through 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 22. The advisory is in effect for the North Carolina mountains, where a wintry mix of snow, sleet and ice could fall ahead of Christmas weekend. Meanwhile, Charlotte will experience bitter cold with some of the lowest temperatures felt in the Charlotte metro in over two years.
WCNC Charlotte forecaster Larry Sprinkle says a Weather Aware Day has been declared for the weekend due to the dangerously cold temperatures. You will want to limit your time outdoors, particularly in the early morning and evening hours when temperatures are below freezing with wind chill making it feel close to single-digits.
