The Committee for State Security is the intelligence and secret service of the Soviet Union. The organization, which was first established in 1918 under the name Cheka, was subject to many name changes and finally took the name KGB on March 13, 1954.

The main tasks of the KGB were to provide foreign intelligence and counterintelligence, to protect state borders, to combat crimes such as nationalism, opposition and anti-Soviet activities, to protect the USSR, the CPSU and the Soviet government, and to provide the necessary intelligence and communications for the government. The KGB provided intelligence on behalf of the state on issues that threatened national security and required defense, and when necessary, directly intervened in the incident and eliminated the threats.

The agency was formed in 1954 by the merger of the NKVD unit of Internal Intelligence and the MVD unit of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Its headquarters were located in the Lubyanka Building, which was identified with the KGB, on Lubyanka Square in Moscow.
