Nicholas Richardson and historian Dominik Szczęsny-Kostanecki at the Pałac Pod Blachą (part of the Royal Castle in Warsaw complex) discuss the life and personality of the most emblematic polish national hero of the turn of the XVIII and XIX century.
Born in Vienna into a prominent aristocratic Polish family that rose to power in the XVIII century. He served first in the Austrian Imperial Army (his mother came from the prominent Bohemian Kinsky family), then joined (advised by his uncle the last King of Poland Stanisław II August Poniatowski) the Polish-Lithuanian Army and a few days before his death at the battle of Leipzig became the only foreigner who was given the rank of Marshal of France by Napoleon I.
