STORYLINE
People in Turkey and Italy joined a global protest opposing violence against women on Thursday.
In the Besiktas neighbourhood of Istanbul, Turkey, hundreds of men, women and children took part in a dance protest to support the "One Billion Rising" campaign against poverty and violence affecting women and children.
According to the campaign website, one (b) billion women all over the world suffer some form of violence in their lives, whether physical or psychological.
Protester Ibrahim Soylemez said the dance event was to "teach men, people, to show respect for their families, their mothers, their sisters, their wives and to say 'no' to violence against women."
The event, organised to coincide with Valentine's Day, was also held in another 20 Turkish cities and in many other cities across the globe, including Rome, Johannesburg and Sarajevo.
In the Italian capital, hundreds of people gathered at the famous Spanish Steps to perform a dance as part of the event.
Protest organiser Gretchen Bloom said violence affects one third of all women in the world.
"Hopefully today with one billion women and men rising all over the world to say 'we are here together and enough', things will change," said Bloom.
The One Billion Rising campaign was started by American playwright and activist Eve Ensler against all forms of sexual crime against women.
