Agostinho Neto (1922–1979) – Angola.
Agostinho Neto was the first president of independent Angola and a prominent leader in the fight against Portuguese colonialism. As head of the MPLA (Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola), Neto led the armed struggle that eventually won Angola’s independence in 1975. His government was marked by efforts to stabilize the war-torn country, though it faced ongoing civil conflict. Neto is remembered for his poetry as well as his revolutionary leadership.
