Professor Malcolm Reed was appointed as Dean of Brighton and Sussex Medical School in December 2014. Since then, BSMS has seen 40% growth in undergraduate medical student numbers and significant improvements in national standing as reflected in the National Student Survey and league table position. There has also been significant growth in postgraduate taught and research students, and in a wide range of research activities.
From 2019 -2022, he was appointed Co-Chair of the Medical Schools Council (MSC) and Chair of the MSC’s Education sub-committee.
Professor Reed has a long-standing track record in cancer research, with more than 350 publications. His main areas of clinical research are related to the surgical management of breast cancer, with particular emphasis on breast cancer in older women.
