World number 1 Wang Chuqin (China) after winning the mixed doubles final with Sun Yingsha at the Paris Olympics. During the victory celebration a photographer accidentally trampled on his paddle and made it unusable. The next morning Wang (playing with a backup bat) lost his round of 32 match against Truls Moregardh of Sweden and was eliminated from the singles competition. In their 8 previous encounters, Moregardh had never defeated Wang. He ended up winning the silver medal.
