European Parliament’s Committee on Gender Equality is coming to Washington DC on March, 9 to speak with the US administration, members of Congress and civil society about the situation of women rights’, especially about their access to abortion.
The chair of the committee, Robert Biedron: “Over the last years, we have observed the backlash against women's rights both in Europe and in the United States. This worrisome phenomenon puts many of the heart out gains that women have achieved in jeopardy, particularly in the area of sexual reproductive health rights.”
He adds that the decision of the US Supreme Court to overturn Roe versus Wade and consequently renounce the federal constitutional right to abortion and open up the possibility to of complete abortion ban has transformed lives of women and girls across the US, disproportionately affecting women in vulnerable situations.
“With the recent DeFacto abortion ban in Poland and limitations on sexual and reproductive health and rights in other EU countries, a Russian of sexual and reproductive health rights is our shared issue” - says Biedron.
According to him backlash against women's rights and gender equality appears also across other sectors, including social and labour protection, education, political decision making positions and working place.
“Not to mention, the gender based violence remains one of the most prevalent human rights violations in the world, including rape and sexual violence, youth as a weapon of war, and that women and girls are particularly affected by the war in Ukraine” - underlines the chair.
He emphasizes that in light of those words on developments, the committee will continue working together with the EU allies to contract those negative developments. “We need to stand strong against the backlash against gender equality and the latinity discriminatory actions we see against women they're LGBTQIA, plus community or other vulnerable groups” - says Biedron.
“Therefore, I'm looking forward to meeting our interlocutors in Washington, DC to discuss our cooperation in maintaining access to safe and legal abortion in accordance with the World Health Organization recommendations. We hope that all visit in the US will strengthen our partnership in combating the challenges on the path to gender equality and improve the situation of women and girls across the US, the EU and of course globally” - underlines Biedron.
