(28 Oct 2016) The Islamic State (IS) group is trying to delay the advance of Iraqi forces through the use of suicide attacks and improvised explosive devices, according to United States officials stationed at the Qayara airfield base south of Mosul.
During a visit by The Associated Press to the base, soldiers had to move to bunkers, after what turned out to be a false alarm for incoming fire.
Major Christopher Parker said coalition forces have to be cautious.
Iraqi forces have retaken 40 villages around militant-held Mosul, according to a Brigadier general with the US Air Force.
Around 1.000 coalition service members are based at the Qayara airfield, which had been partly destroyed while under the control of IS.
The coalition forces advise and assist the Iraqi forces in the fight against the Islamic State group.
The fight to retake Mosul is the largest and most complex operation Iraqi forces have undertaken since the withdrawal of US forces in 2014.
