In this episode of the Zeeve Defi Series, Ravi Chamria, the CEO and Co-founder of Zeeve begin by introducing himself and the platform Zeeve which is trusted by thousands of Blockchain startups, Enterprises, and Web3 Developers to deploy, scale, monitor and manage their decentralised applications.
In this webinar he talks about the ‘Journey to Blockchain Scalability A Close Look at the Complete Scaling Solutions for L1 & L2 C’. At 0:31, he gives an overview of things which he’s going to discuss in this webinar.
At 1:16, he highlights the idea of Scalability where he mentions scalability in blockchain, and the challenges posed by the Scalability Trilemma.
At 2:31, he discusses the Scalability Trilemma i.e. Decentralisation, Security, & Scalability according to which when designing a blockchain, developers have to make trade-offs among the three essential aspects.
At 10:15, he shares the solutions for Blockchain Scalability which we’ve divided into 3 parts including: L1 Solutions (On-Chain), L2 Solutions (Off-Chain), App-Chains
At 11:36, he discusses the First Layer Scalability solutions (also known as on-chain solutions) in detail which require changes in the codebase of the main blockchain network.
At 12:31, he explains the process of Hard Forking which focuses on making structural or fundamental changes in the property of a blockchain network. It has two types: Planned Hard Fork, Contentious Hard Fork
At 15:33, he explains the Segregated Witness which is a protocol enhancement in the Bitcoin blockchain network that focuses on changing the way and structure of data storage.
At 17:11, he discusses the concept of Sharding which focuses on breaking down the blockchain network into smaller, more manageable chunks known as Shards.
At 19:06, he starts discussing more about L2 Scalability Solutions (also known as Off-Chain) in which the underlying network (mainnet) does not need to process large amounts of data.
At 21:24, he shares about the State Channels which involves setting up a channel between two parties who want to transact with each other. He also mentions that the lightning network(bitcoin) and the Raiden Network(Eth) are popular examples of State Channels.
At 23:26, he mentions Plasma which permits chains within chains (child chains) allowing for an exponential increase in scalability.
At 26:12, he mentions SideChains which are separate blockchains connected to the main blockchain via a two-way peg for asset transfer between the main chain and the sidechain using a bridge. Some of the examples include xDai Chain, POA Network & Polygon.
At 30:00, he mentions Roll-ups which are the most popular L2 solutions and work by batching many small transactions into a single compressed transaction, which is then submitted to the roll-up smart contract on the Layer 1 chain.
At 33:07, he discusses one of the types of Roll-ups i.e. Optimistic Roll-ups which is the most used roll-up at the moment comprising over 80% of the total roll-up transactions.
At 36:39, he discusses the other type of roll-ups i.e. Zero Knowledge rollups which are a scalability solution that separates transaction execution from consensus and data availability.
Lastly, he talks about App-Chains which are specialised blockchains designed to address scalability needs for specific use cases or applications.
Ravi mentions the blockchain trilemma, which states that increasing one or two aspects (security or decentralisation) will impact the other aspects, including scalability.
Ravi acknowledges that for blockchain to be adopted at the enterprise level and compete with traditional systems, scalability is crucial. Blockchain needs to achieve high transaction throughput and performance similar to traditional systems.
Ravi emphasises the need for solutions that increase throughput and scalability without compromising security and decentralisation. Continuous improvements and new solutions are being developed to address blockchain scalability challenges.
At 47:35, he wraps up the session and opens the floor for questions and further discussions.
