"U Gioia" is the name of the statue representing Jesus Christ. For the Easter celebration the city of Scicli organizes a big ceremony that involves the entire town for the "resurrection of Christ". The wooden statue is brought all through Scicli, going from one church to the other, blessing the people on his way. All the religious believers shows all the devotion to the "L'uomo vivo" affectionately called "Gioia", which literally means kind of "my dear" in Sicilian dialect. The faithful people throw rose petals from the balcony to the Gioia and the large number of strong men carrying the statue, "fight" with the weight of the statue itself but immensely proud of what they are doing. Gioia is a truly spectacular event, with very strong traditions and character. Every Sunday easter in Scicli.
