Coaching the Basics of Football: 5 Fun drills for Kids aged 4 5 6 7
I have used these drills when coaching younger players as they cover a lot of the basic skills to help them excel at football.
Drill 1: Tick Tock Clock –
Working on Dribbling, close control and passing
Set up:
Create 2 circles (Inner and Outer) – make them about 2 meters apart.
Place 4 cones in the middle circle (where the players stand) and put 8 cones around the edge of the outer circle.
How to:
When the coach says go – all the players start in the inner circle. One with the ball will dribble to an outside cone, when they will turn with the ball and pass to the next player. They then will run around the next cone and so on until all players have been around.
TIP make sure the outside cones as spread out (can use less if you want) this may stop player colliding due to there ages.
Drill 2: Traffic Lights –
Works on close control and awareness
Set up:
Make a square about 5x5 meters and place the cones in the middle in a random pattern.
Players start on one side each with a ball.
How to:
When the coach says go they dribble to the cones in order Green-Yellow-Red. When they get to the cone its upto the coach they can either – put there foot on the ball, just touch the cone with the ball etc. this keeps going until the coach says stop.
TIP: try to make sure the players don’t use the same 3 cones (there is always one).
Drill 3: Cops and Robbers –
Works on passing, moving and tackling
Set up:
Make 3 squares 3x3 meters (size depends on the coach) but about 1 meter apart. place 4 players in each box and give them a number (same numbers in both boxes). They each have a ball.
How to:
Player pass between themselves in each box. When the coach shouts a number that play on each team must run to get the ball from the other team.
When the ball is with the “robber” or goes out of the box that team wins the point.
Do this for all players and sometimes random up the numbers.
Drills 4: Warm Up
Great for fitness and pre match/pre training
Set up:
Place 4 cones in a line (usually 1 meter between each) but size depends on the coach. Place one cone off set 1 meter – this is the start cone.
How To:
Players take it in turns and sprint from the start cone to the end. When at the end they turn and walk/jog to the back of the line.
Drill 5: Which Way Shooting
Develops shooting, setting up a shot and awareness.
Set Up:
Place 2 cones 2 meters apart, one on the edge of the penalty box. The coach stands here. The other players line up with a ball behind the other cone. Put up a goal and a goalkeeper.
How To:
The player passes to the coach who can play the ball to the left or right. The player runs to the ball ( I allow one touch to set themselves) then they take the shot. This keeps the game interesting for the players as they don’t know which way it will go.
