On December 25th, 2004 most High School students woke up to their new gaming consoles or vehicles, while Anse Rigby woke up to a $300 guitar starter pack from his mother. Anse’s reaction was what you would expect from a high school teenager, he would much rather have had the $300 instead. Despite his conviction and, at the time his better judgement, Anse still decided to learn. That following week he went across the street and learned the basics from a best friend and, meanwhile, learned to sing from his sister, mom and Dad. Anse never looked back.
Anse Rigby was born and raised in Forest, Mississippi. A husband and father, graduate of the Mississippi School for Women of Nursing (no laughing) and the Worship Leader at St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church in Madison, Mississippi, Anse has found a new direction for his life with the release of his new LP “All Along.” Anse’s first studio release deals with his love for his wife Courtney, his two daughters Ella and Charlie and his journey to this point in his young life.
His guitar from his mother became one of the most impactful moments of his walk. 2 years after, his mother passed away from a battle with brain cancer. The strongest woman he knew, a beautiful soul, and his biggest fan, she left such an impact not only with the love she had for Anse, but with her faith walk as well. “She was so strong and faithful,” Anse said. “She was my comfort. I only saw her cry once in the 3 1/2 months of the disease and that was the day of her diagnosis. Her testimony with her faith in God in that trying time has been an aspiration of mine and my spiritual walk.”
It didn’t take Anse long to begin writing. He wrote his first song “If You Only Knew” within 3 months of learning to play. He played it for some of the girls at school, making them cry and they loved it. Once he saw the power in storytelling that was when his pursuit of songwriting first began. Having the ladies gawk over him wasn't so bad either. Shortly thereafter he played at intermission of a high school beauty pageant and then began leading worship on some Wednesday nights with his youth group. Needless to say he caught the bug.
There is no doubt that Anse has grown since his first home studio release “More Now” in 2013. “All Along” is the next step featuring a full studio band recorded at Blue Sky Studios in Jackson, Mississippi produced by Casey Combest. “I went into the studio with skepticism and not knowing what to expect, but I have been really blown away by the quality of this music. It’s amazing how the acoustic format can be transformed through the process. This process has ignited a fire in me to get my music out and to pursue playing venues.”
Influenced by 90’s country and alternative rock, Rigby has found a home in the singer/songwriter genre. Finding inspiration for his writing style from the likes of Dave Barnes and Ben Rector, Anse has transformed the moments in his life into relatable moments of storytelling. “I draw inspiration from people who need healing. I feel that music and storytelling are so powerful. It encourages others by reminding them that they are not alone in a certain situation. I try to base everything I write around love. The most important thing God has given and should shine out of us.”
From the passing of his mother to his wife Courtney, Rigby has given us an inside look to his journey. Going from track-to-track, All Along reveals that those who have dealt with the lowest of lows can make it out and love their life much like Anse does. “There will always be scars, but I adore my wife and I’m thankful for her. One of my favorite lines is from the song ‘In Love.’ The line says ‘I promise I’m never gonna leave you // I know that’s all you really need to hear.’ People need different things. And it just goes back to giving my wife what I know she doesn’t necessarily need to hear all the time, but it affirms relationships and I hope at the end of the day is one of the messages people take away from this album.” I don't think it is a coincidence that Anse and Courtney started their 12 year relationship at the same time he began playing guitar.
The title track for All Along was actually written once Anse began the process in the studio. It was meant to tie the rest of the album together describing the process of lovers and how they came to be. “However as we know, there is something so much more outside of a love between man and woman. And that is Christ's love for us. Our view can become skewed when we put our earthly glasses on and concentrate on ourselves.
