✨Sun spots, also known as solar lentigines, are a common skin condition resulting from prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
🔸When UV rays penetrate the skin, they cause damage to the DNA within the skin cells. This damage can lead to the activation of melanocytes, the cells that make melanin (the pigment that gives our skin its color).
🔸As a protective response, the skin increases melanin production to protect deeper skin layers from further UV damage.
🔸Over time, with continuous UV exposure, melanocytes can become overactive, producing excess melanin that clusters in certain areas, leading to the formation of sun spots.
🔸These spots are typically flat, well-defined, and vary in color from light brown to dark brown, depending on the individual's skin tone and the extent of sun exposure.
🔸The risk of developing solar lentigines increases with age and with cumulative effect of UV exposure over a lifetime.
🔸To help prevent these spots, it's important to wear sunscreen, hats, and other protective clothing when out in the sun.
