Got a great clip for you of Holland defending in a zonal system while down to 10 players. Although they only manage to win the ball back deep in their own half, we can take a look at some of the areas to work on for a zonal defence. On top of that we get to watch the great Jeroen Hertzberger make a fantastic solo run to win a well deserved penalty corner! (Shame they didn’t go to him as the drag flick option after this!)

So the Zonal Defensive System:

FORCING A MISTAKE - In a zonal system we are trying to force a mistake from the opposition, whether that be a miss-trap, bad pass or playing into an area of congestion. Ultimately we are controlling and dictating the play by manipulating the available space.

PRESSURE ON THE MIDDLE - Notice in the video that when the ball is played into the midfield, 3 Dutch players commit to taking the space away, forcing a backwards pass and a recycle from the Australian team. This move requires full commitment from all 3 players, if not, it gives the midfielder the opportunity to exploit the space that has been left and advance up the field.

ADJUST - The zonal defence requires adjustment to align with the current ball carrier. As the ball is transferred by Australia, the Dutch rotate to ensure there is a player on the direct line to goal, forcing a sideways pass and again, reducing advancement up the field.
