Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), produced by the pituitary gland, is essential for healthy thyroid function, says UCLA Health endocrinologist Angela Leung. This butterfly-shaped gland in your neck regulates metabolism and relies on iodine from your diet to create thyroid hormones.
Similar to how a gas pedal works, TSH controls thyroid hormone production. Elevated TSH signifies underproduction (hypothyroidism), while low TSH indicates overproduction (hyperthyroidism).
Monitoring TSH levels helps your doctor gauge your thyroid health and metabolism regulation.
