Under the Skin is a 2013 sci-fi movie, directed by Jonathon Glazer starring Scarlett Johansson. It is a loose adaptation of a novel of the same name by Michel Faber.
In the book, an alien kidnaps people on Earth and sells their body for the aliens to consume. The movie strays a bit from the novel but the influence is clear. An alien wears a woman’s skin and goes around Glasgow, seducing men, bringing them to her place, and drowning them in a pole that works as a food processor. The movie is futuristic and avant-garde but as the story intensifies, it begins to ground itself to the Earth more and more.
Brimming with interesting visuals, the movie keeps the suspense alive for the majority of the time, making each reveal more and more interesting. An eerie soundtrack by Mica Levi only adds to its intensity.
The woman’s experiences on Earth give her an understanding of human emotions. She tries to understand what’s under the skin of the humans while we remain oblivious to what’s under hers.
