(29 Nov 2010) Greece's Socialist government issued an emergency order on Monday to force striking ferry workers to end a week-long protest that has led to goods shortages on the country's islands.
The rarely-used order came after the striking Greek Seamen's Federation said it would extend the strike until Thursday.
Earlier, talks between the government and employers failed to break the deadlock.
It was the second time during the financial crisis that the government enacted powers that could see strikers arrested if they defy the order.
Unionists said late on Monday that they would ignore the order to go back to work at the port of Piraeus, which is the country's largest, but would allow ships to sail from other Greek harbours.
One protester, who would not give his name, said "The strike continues. We don't care what they decided."
Strikers are angry at the government's plans to relax the application of collective wage agreements, arguing the move will lead to wage cuts.
The agreements are part of labour reforms in the crisis-hit country.
