George Pal began his career in his native Hungary before moving around Europe during the 1930's. His work was primarily in animation, where he developed his Pal-Doll technique of using Replacement Animation with wooden puppets to create the illusion of movement. Pal would continue his work in the United States, having immigrated there in 1939. Pal's Puppetoons would garner multiple Academy Awards nominations and ultimately lead to an Honorary Oscar in 1943 for his technical work. In 1950 Pal moved into live action with The Great Rupert, a story about a dancing squirrel.
