Australia's most secret defence base, Pine Gap, is in the spotlight again after six protesters avoided jail for sneaking in.

The joint Australia-U.S. facility, which marked its 50th anniversary this year, runs mainly surveillance and communications operations.

Its location 20km from Alice Springs was chosen so it would be out of the range of spy ships lurking in international waters off the coast of Australia.

More than 1,000 people work at Pine gap, half of which are Australians including operations staff, Federal Police, and various contractors.
