Deliver to hand is a skill that adds necessary efficiency to the retrieve. I like to call it Home Delivery that starts with creating an imaginary circle with a half radius of one large step away from you. That defines the area where you want to the dog deliver the bird to you – always.

You never want to go to the dog, especially a young dog, to take the bird from him. That encourages him running away which creates all kinds of bad habits.

A critical component of Deliver to Hand is that the dog has to hold the bird in his mouth until he delivers it to you. He cannot drop it at any time outside of your home delivery circle. If he does, and the bird has only been wing shot, some of those birds will get away.

Your retriever has been bred to go get the bird and bring it back to somewhere. You must teach him to hold it until he comes within your home delivery circle. That is another powerful reason to force fetch train your retriever.
