According to wiretapped conversations the Italian lawmaker was supposed to spend the New Year at a five-star hotel in Marrakesh, which was allegedly paid for by the Moroccan government for him and his family
However, that didn’t turn out to be the case as the entire Panzeri family spent the start of year under arrest. Until 2019, Panzeri acted as EU’s point of contact for the EU-Moroccan relations, as a human rights advocate which made him a frequent visitor to the luxurious Marrakesh resort, La Mamounia, which hosted Winston Churchill
Panzeri’s wife and daughter have been kept under house arrest in Lombardy and are awaiting their transfer to Belgium, where the prosecutors have held him on the allegation that they both knew about the corruption scheme.
According to reports the family of the politician allegedly discussed gifts from Abderrahim Atmoun who is Morocco’s ambassador to Poland along with a week at La Mamounia at Rabat’s expense
Neither the lawyer for Panzeri commented on the issue and nor did the foreign ministry of Morocco. Meanwhile, the lawyer posing for the wife and daughter of Panzeri clearly denied any wrongdoing
Whereas, parliamentary records claim that the Panzeri held views favorable to the Moroccan government from as early as the 2010, during which time he even urged the EU commission to set aside more funds for the country, in addition to his voting record, which indicated positive votes for trade and fisheries agreement
For more than decades, Panzeri has been connected to the Moroccan government and working in favor of them. Investigators have alleged the the Panzeri group, influenced the votes against two Moroccan activists who had been shortlisted for the prestigious European parliament Sakharov human rights award in 2018 and 2021
The influence was so high that instead of voting in favor of the candidate promoted by the far left, the European parliament ended up voting for a far right nominated candidate from Bolivia. But the corruption scheme was not run by Panzeri alone, as he had two MEPs join him in the EU gate case
who currently enjoy immunity in the case for their involvement, one of them being his successor as Morocco’s point-man Andrea Cozzolino in the European parliament who also inherited Panzeri’s aide who is also currently in the Belgian custody along with his former boss
In relation to the Morocco gate case, the EU foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell visited Rabat and discussed the allegations against Panzeri and his connection to the Moroccan government with the authorities there.
He said, “Obviously, we are concerned about the events which have been reported in the press.” Furthermore he added that there can be “no impunity for corruption, zero tolerance for it” on behalf of the EU.
