Red Wax Begonia, toxic to pets, 4K 60p
Also known as: Clubed begonia, Bedding begonia, Perpetual begonia.
Begonia cucullata is a native of South America. It is often used as a ground cover and also does well in containers. The blossoms of wax begonia can be red, white, or pink. In some states like Florida and Georgia, wax begonia is considered an invasive species due to its tendency to reseed prolifically in the right conditions.
Ingestion of Begonia species is toxic to animals including cats, dogs and horses, especially those with small body mass. Skin irritation can also happen when physically contacted.
Although it has always been known for its long flowering time, its popularity actually comes from the unique characteristics of its leaves which have a waxy coating. Also, the plant is called wax begonia in memory of the French botanist, Michel Bégon.
