STORYLINE:
Afghan security forces were seen engaging in gun battles in the streets of Kandahar for a second day on Sunday, after the Taliban unleashed a major assault on government buildings in the southern city.
Ministry of Interior spokesman Zemeri Bashary said Sunday that security forces are fighting militants holed up in the Kandahar Hotel, located next to two of the buildings targeted on Saturday.
A soldier on the ground said militants had also entered an old Afghan army base and a school.
Shooting started shortly after midday on Saturday and lasted more than seven hours, while government forces were backed by military helicopters firing from overhead.
Fighting stopped overnight after Afghan forces had secured the government buildings which had been attacked, Bashary said.
It's understood the shooting began after security forces began a clearing up operation on Sunday.
Bashary said so far a total of 23 attackers have been killed as well as two members of the security forces.
Another 40 people were wounded.
