Trump's first impeachment - 2020
In closing remarks on Friday, Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., the lead impeachment prosecutor, read part of a New York Times story about the upcoming book written by former national security adviser John Bolton. Democrats have repeatedly urged senators to vote for calling witnesses, including Bolton. The Times report said that the book manuscript from Bolton says that President Donald Trump directed him to help pressure Ukraine in May. Trump has denied instructing Bolton to do so. "Here you have the president saying John Bolton isn't telling the truth. Let's find out. Let's put John Bolton under oath. Let's find out who's telling the truth. The trial is supposed to be a quest for the truth. Let's not fear what we will learn," Schiff said.
After days of arguments posed by the House managers and President Donald Trump’s legal team, followed by questions posed by senators, the lawmakers debate and vote on whether they wish to subpoena new witnesses and documents on Friday, Jan. 31. Then the Senate must decide whether to acquit the president or convict him of the charges and remove him from office. The House of Representatives impeached Trump in December on two articles -- abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
