*Refractive Surgery Evolution: From Traditional Methods to the New Silk Technology at Center for Sight*
Hi, I’m *Dr. Varon Motra,* Senior Consultant in Cornea, Cataract, and Refractive Surgery at Centre for Sight, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad. I’m also the Head of Clinical Services here. Today, I’d like to talk about the exciting advancements in vision correction and the shift from traditional methods to the new Silk technology in refractive surgery.
Traditional Vision Correction Methods: In the past, there were two main techniques used for vision correction: surface ablation and flap creation with excimer laser ablation.
Surface ablation involved removing the top layer of the cornea (the epithelium) and reshaping the underlying corneal tissue with an excimer laser. While effective, surface ablation sometimes caused haze, discomfort, and slower recovery times – with healing taking anywhere from 3 to 8 weeks.
The next major advancement was *LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis).* In LASIK, we create a flap in the cornea, use the excimer laser to reshape the underlying tissue, and then reposition the flap. While recovery was quicker and there was less discomfort compared to surface ablation, LASIK did carry a small risk. If the eye experienced trauma, there was a slight chance the flap could move, leading to complications.
Introducing Lenticule Extraction: Now, the focus has shifted to lenticule extraction, which is a game-changer in refractive surgery. This newer technique is much more precise, with smaller incisions (only 2.8 to 3 mm) and no need to remove the epithelium or create a flap. The lenticule, a small piece of corneal tissue that corresponds to the patient's refractive error, is removed without disturbing the corneal layers.
At *Centre for Sight,* we were one of the first to offer ReLEx Smile, a technique of lenticule extraction, across the country and the first center in Hyderabad to offer it. Now, we are proud to introduce the latest Silk technology, developed by Johnson & Johnson.
*How Silk Technology* is Different: The Silk technology improves on the ReLEx Smile technique in several ways:
*Lenticule Shape:* The lenticule used in Silk is biconvex, meaning it closely matches the natural shape of the cornea. This reduces the risk of higher-order aberrations (visual distortions), leading to better image quality and clearer vision.
*Less Dryness:* Thanks to the biconvex shape, there is less damage to corneal nerves, which means significantly lower chances of dryness after surgery. Even if dryness occurs, it usually lasts only for a few days.
*Faster Recovery:* With a small incision of just 2.8 to 3 mm, healing happens quickly – usually in 48 to 72 hours. As a result, patients experience a much faster visual recovery compared to traditional methods.
We are very excited to bring this new, cutting-edge Silk technology to Hyderabad and to continue offering the best in refractive surgery for our patients.
