Los nómadas más viejos del Zagora y Merzuga, en el desértico sureste de Marruecos, no recuerdan haber visto en más de medio siglo extensas lagunas y riachuelos fluyendo entre las dunas. Flamantes acumulaciones de agua surgidas en las últimas semanas sorprenden a los visitantes de uno de los parajes turísticos más frecuentados del país magrebí. Los sucesivos temporales de lluvias excepcionales al final del verano y el comienzo del otoño han causado este inusual fenómeno, sin precedentes recientes, que ha transformado el paisaje del Sáhara.
El relieve de estas regiones ha facilitado el embalsamiento de agua en barrancos y vaguadas y la resurrección de lagos como el del parque nacional de Iriqui, desecado hace décadas. Tras el temporal de lluvia de la primera quincena de septiembre, imágenes captadas por el sistema MODIS del satélite Terra de la NASA y del satélite Sentinel 2, del programa europeo Coopernicus, constataron el renacimiento de un humedal de alto valor ecológico en la ruta migratoria de flamencos y otras especies acuáticas.
