Ellipses are used to indicate an omission, create suspense, or show a trailing off of thought.
Here are the rules for using ellipses correctly:
1. Use three periods. Ellipses always contain three periods (...). Do not use two periods or four periods.
2. Include spaces. Put a space before and after the ellipses ( ... ). Do not put a space in between the periods.
3. Do not use ellipses at the beginning or end of a sentence. Only use ellipses in the middle of a sentence.
4. Do not use ellipses with other punctuation. Do not use ellipses with commas, colons, semicolons, question marks, or exclamation points. Only use ellipses on their own or with periods.
5. Use ellipses sparingly. Only use ellipses occasionally for emphasis. Do not overuse them or your writing will seem choppy and disjointed.
6. Make the meaning clear. Ensure that the meaning is still clear when using ellipses and that you are not omitting anything important. Only omit minor details.
7. Use ellipses in informal writing only. Ellipses are typically only used in informal writing like personal emails, texts, blog posts, and conversations. Avoid using them in formal writing.
