(Mar. 18) Watch live as members of the United Nations Security Council hold a meeting on the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Friday, March 18, 2022, in New York.
President Joe Biden spoke with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to pressure him to use his influence with Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine on a call that began shortly after 9 a.m. in Washington.
Biden is also to warn Xi that the U.S. will “impose costs” on Beijing if he backs Russia, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said. The Pentagon warned that Russia may become more reliant on its nuclear deterrent as the conflict and sanctions weaken its conventional forces.
Russia repeated a threat to target arms convoys in Ukraine sent by the U.S. and its allies. Missiles again hit areas in the far west of Ukraine, including near the airport at Lviv, the mayor said. It was the first reported Russian strike in some days near the Polish border where Ukrainians are attempting to flee to Poland.
