Calving on the Starrett Family Farm usually starts around the beginning of February and the 6 week calving rate is 83% to try get as many cows to grass for as long as possible. All calves get colostrum within 2 hours of being born and will go into an automatic feeder after 3 or 4 days old. The automatic calf feeder is a recent addition to the farm which gives consistency to the calf rearing. The feeder reduces the labour input during the morning and evening which are the busiest periods on farm. Calves have access to a paddock while still using the automatic feeder.
