A lecture on social surveys and sampling design for surveys taken from a series on research methods and research design given to masters (graduate) students by Graham R Gibbs at the University of Huddersfield. This is part 2 of two, and examines what is involved in drawing representative samples from a population. The 'gold standard' approach of probability sampling is explained and different forms of probability sampling: simple sampling, systematic sampling, stratification, multi-stage, cluster sampling are examined along with some non-probability sampling approaches such as quota sampling, opportunity sampling, snowball sampling and theoretical sampling.
