The resurrection of Jesus is the event that founded Christianity. Without the resurrection of Jesus, Christianity is nothing. This video presents five good reasons for believing in the resurrection, and hence for understanding that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.

The video starts with a rapid review of ancient writers who mention Jesus. These include Tacitus, Pliny the younger and Josephus, although there are many more. These all tell us that Jesus died on the cross; we have plenty of evidence that tells us how crucifixion was carried out.

The five reasons for believing that the resurrection really happened are:

1. The tomb of Jesus was empty afterwards. This is referred to by various ancient sources, including important Jewish ones.

2. The disciples went from being frightened men, hiding away from the authorities, to confident and fearless proclaimers of the Gospel throughout the world, in the face of persecution from both Jewish and Roman authorities.

3. The eyewitnesses who saw Jesus alive after the resurrection include sceptics like the Apostle Paul, and like James and Judah, half-brothers of Jesus. Paul had taken an active role in the persecution of Christianity and neither James nor Judah had believed Jesus before his resurrection (John 7:5). After the resurrection all three wrote letters which are included in the New Testament, showing that they had become Christians, and Paul and James were put to death because of their faith.

4. The Apostles taught a religion with a moral imperative which calls people to a life of truth and integrity (see, for example Ephesians 4:20-32). They wrote what they believed to be true, and this includes the resurrection of Jesus and the fact that they had met him alive after this. Their accounts are unvarnished and even include embarrassing details such as the fact that not only was the empty tomb discovered by women (who would not have been recognised as lawful witnesses at the time) but the first person to see Jesus alive after the resurrection was a woman.

5. There are various alternative theories to the resurrection, but none of them takes account of the above facts.

The only possible conclusion is that Jesus did, in fact, rise from the dead, and that we therefore need to adjust our world view, and to do something about this.
