Relax. Breathe deeply. Focus and fold! Integrate mindfulness to the routine with this simple, traditional hopping frog model.
Origami has many benefits for kids:
1) Improves memory and concentration
2) Teaches mathematics,
3) Develops spatial skills.
All you need is a piece of paper and your attention! Therefore, origami is also a wonderful way to integrate mindfulness into kids’ daily lives, and help children focus on their tasks. We call this “mindful origami”
Mindful origami also encourages kids to let go of perfectionism and self-judgment. By creating origami models, children can feel more familiar with the paper and technique, thus gaining confidence in their work and as they strengthen their ability to focus .
Please check out some tips that help foster origami and mindfulness in children:
1) Origami is a slow process, and give them the space to take their time with each fold.
2) It’s important to focus on the step on which you’re working, not the previous steps or next step.
3) Ask children what they are noticing using their five senses during the origami process:
What does the paper feel like in their hands?
What sounds are they hearing with each fold and movement of the paper?
Does the paper have any scent?
What does the color of the paper bring up for them?
These are all prompting questions to help get kids into a mindful state.
4) Lastly, remind them that origami is a place of non-judgement. Origami will never be perfect, it is a practice to continually build on, just like mindfulness!
