When starting from a yamadori or a grown-up nursery material we often have to apply hard pruning for Bonsai tree development. However, there are several particular reasons for hard pruning when training Bonsai trees. I perform these aggressive pruning operations on the Ficus benjamina and also discuss about when to hard prune bonsai trees referring to the preferred overall state of the tree at the time of hard pruning. This is important not only to increase the chance of obtaining the expected results but also to assure that the operation does not endanger the tree.
A two month update with the results obtained by hard pruning my clump style Ficus benjamina Bonsai illustrates the effects you can get and what you can expect in terms of back budding. In what regards other potential long term effects, future will tell if hard pruning was the right choice in this case.
