We can stop an application from accessing the internet via WiFi or mobile data (or both) using a free and open source firewall application.

Android's permission system does a fairly good job at limiting an application or game's access to certain parts of the operating system. If you don't want to receive notifications from one of them, then there's a way to enforce that rule. The same is said with accessing the storage of your device too.
But Android has yet to implement a way to completely block an application from accessing the internet.
So today, I want to show you a free and open source firewall application called NetGuard that can do exactly that.
This application can be downloaded from the Google Play Store, but you can also build it from source since it's all there on the GitHub page as well. NetGuard does not require root access, and instead, will use the VPN feature of Android in order to control which apps can access the internet and which apps cannot.
Once installed, we simply need to open up the NetGuard app and then enable it via the toggle right here at the top.
Let's use Google News as an example here today. What if this was an application or game that we did not want accessing the internet. For whatever reason. Then we would simply need to open up the NetGuard application, find the application or game in the list, and then tap the icons next to it for WiFi and mobile data.
Now, when we open up the Google News application, it is unable to refresh the contents of the application because it cannot access the internet to download the required data.
Internet access will continue to be blocked for this specific Android application or game until you go in and disable this block using these two icons. Red means internet access is blocked while this green/blue color tells us it has full access to the internet.
I hope that one day we see Google adding internet connectivity as a run-time permission for Android. There are some custom ROMs that build this feature into the OS, but they're essentially doing the same thing as we've done here today.
