Directed by Giorgio Stegani (1928-2020) from a story written by Warren Kiefer (1929-1995), this Italian / West German western stars Adriana Facchetti (1921-1993), Al Hoosman (1918-1968), Antonio Sabàto (1943-2021), Bud Spencer (1929-2016), Carlo Gaddi (1936-1977), Enzo Fiermonte (1908-1993), Gordon Mitchell (1923-2003), Lee Van Cleef (1925-1989), Lionel Stander (1908-1994), and Romano Puppo (1933-1994). Released under several titles such as 'The Good Die First, 'Bloodsilver, and 'The Last Bill is Yours, the film is an entertaining mixture of American idealism and Italian comedy. Fortunately, the comedy elements present in the film are unforced and, for the most part, work well. There's a reasonable amount of action on display also, but much of the film's running time is devoted to some well observed character development that takes place within the towns domestic spaces and workplaces. Cinematographer Enzo Serafin (1912-1995) provides some nicely framed shots with fluid camera moves and the film's crowd scenes are quite convincing due to the employment of a good number of extras. This skillfully made production also gives us a glimpse of the European roots of the American West: from the immigrants who made up the mining communities to the music they brought with them.
After the Civil War, a trio of drifters find an ingenious way of stealing a mine's payroll from a moving stagecoach. The three drifter thieves are Billy Joe Cudlip (Lee Van Cleef), Preacher (Lionel Stander) and his associate Al (Al Hoosman), an African-American demobilized soldier. The payroll is in the care of mine engineer Ben Novack (Antonio Sabàto) who just arrived from Europe and must report for work at the mine in Silvertown. After the theft of the payroll is discovered upon the stagecoach's arrival in Silvertown, everyone is puzzled about its disappearance, but the cash is insured and a replacement payroll is sent for. After grumbling about the delay in receiving their wages, the miners return to work. However, the mine owner, James Cooper (Bud Spencer), orders Novack to work with town sheriff John Ferguson (Enzo Fiermonte) in finding the culprits. Happy at not being suspected of theft, Cudlip and his two pals plan to rob the replacement payroll. They also plan to steal the mine's silver shipment en route to the federal silver depository. In the meantime, the three drifters ingratiate themselves with the townsfolk. They even become heroes of sorts when they save the stagecoach from an attack by a gang of bandits led by the notorious cut-throat Burton (Gordon Mitchell). When the sheriff is wounded during the attack, Cudlip is asked to temporarily fill-in the job of lawman, much to the surprise and amusement of his two pals, but he still plans to steal the next payroll and the mine's silver shipment at the first opportunity. Unbeknown to all however, is the fact that Burton and his outlaw gang plan to attack the town in force during an upcoming festival and seize the mine's silver shipment...
The film score (modelled after American westerns) by Riz Ortolani mixes beautiful orchestral pieces with more comedic sounding cues whilst a scene set in the town's church features an impressive sounding recreation of a period hymn. Chorus is by 'I Cantori Moderni di Alessandroni (a musical group founded by Alessandro Alessandroni in 1962) whilst vocals are performed by Italian actress and singer Katyna Ranieri (1927-2018), who was married to Ortolani. Ranieri enjoyed great success as a singer, and as an actress, had worked with the likes of Federico Fellini (1920-1993) and Nino Rota (1911-1979).
